| Description: |
The Depot is the oldest surviving train station remaining in Gainesville and its origins date to the 1860's. Consisting of a passenger terminal and freight area, the 10,000 square foot wood frame structure was a principal stop along the Cross Florida railroad that once connected the cities of Fernandina Beach and Cedar Key. Its significance earned a listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the Depot is poised to become a significant public attraction at Depot Park, a new city park proposed near the intersection of Depot Avenue and South Main Street. Starting in fall 2011, the CRA and its contractor West Construction will start rehabilitating the building's core and shell. Once complete, the CRA will work to identify tenants who can utilize the space, potenially providing dining and retail opportunities to activate this important public space. |
