Project: Hawthorne Road Cafe Project

Area(s): Eastside
Type: Acquisition and Redevelopment
Budget: $330,734
Location: 1700 Block of SE Hawthorne Road
Start date: 2008
Completion date: 2010
Description:

The CRA is redeveloping 1712 and 1714 Hawthorne Road to encourage economic development in the Southeast Gainesville Renaissance Initiative (SEGRI) area. The purpose of this redevelopment is as follows: 1) to create a visually appealing site which will serve as a catalyst for commercial development along the Hawthorne Road Corridor; 2) bring a use to the Eastside that does not currently exist; and 3) lease (or sell) the building to a small business.

The CRA completed renovation of the shell building and recently approved a proposal from Southern Charm and Pie Factory to begin negotiations to lease the space. The concept features a menu based on revised southern classics such as catfish reubens and sweet potato iced tea. A bakery will offer new twists on traditional pie recipes. The new restaurant is slated to open in Fall 2011.
